After launching two online grocery stores earlier this year in Oregon and California, Safeway Inc. says its San Diego-based Vons.com debuted Monday with the strongest customer response yet.
"We had 10% more customers sign up in San Diego than in comparable markets," said Tom Keller, president of Vons, the Safeway supermarket division that operates Vons.com. "We`re delighted with the initial response." The web site, which has hired 50 employees in the San Diego area, began delivering to homes this week in a metropolitan area that includes 65 Zip Codes.
To promote the site, Vons.com is offering a discounted delivery fee for the first 30 days, at $4.95 instead of the usual $9.95. It also offers shoppers Vons Club Card discounts and makes them eligible for the same sweepstakes conducted in Vons supermarkets.
Safeway also offers Safeway.com in Portland, OR, the San Francisco Bay area, Sacramento, CA, and Vancouver, WA. Safeway’s online grocery stores are operated by GroceryWorks, which is partly owned by Safeway and UK-based Tesco PLC, which operates online grocer Tesco.com.
