Global Sports Inc., operator of many e-retailing sites, will make the Verified by Visa card-fraud-prevention service available to retailers whose sites it operates, Visa U.S.A. announced today. More than 40 other sites have adopted Verified by Visa. Consumers sign up for the service at the Visa web site or with their card issuers. When they want to pay for purchase online at a participating merchant, the merchant prompts them for a password to verify they are the legitimate holder of the card.

Global Sports will initially roll out the service to Ashford.com, a luxury and gift site which it owns, as well as to Fogdog.com, TheSportsAuthority.com, DicksSportingGoods.com, GartSports.com, Sportmart.com and Oshmans.com, which Global Sports operates.

"We are committed to providing our partners with outstanding e-commerce web sites, and an important part of that is providing a safe shopping experience in which cardholders are protected. This increased security gives consumers greater comfort in shopping online and allows them to shop with even more peace of mind," said Michael Rubin, CEO at Global Sports. "Verified by Visa is a fast, simple, convenient and effective means of verifying that a customer is the legitimate cardholder."
