Direct License Enhances Use of PictureIQ TransForce and Other PictureIQ Solutions for GIF File Generation

SEATTLE - March 19, 2002 - PictureIQ™ Corporation, the image optimization company, today announced that it has directly licensed Unisys Corporation`s (NYSE: UIS) LZW patent on a worldwide basis for use in PictureIQ TransForce™ and other PictureIQ imaging solutions. Under the terms of the agreement, businesses and other end users of PictureIQ TransForce and other applicable PictureIQ products are expressly authorized to use these products to generate unlimited quantities of the GIF, TIFF, PostScript, and PDF file formats that employ the LZW compression/decompression method covered in this patent. The licensed patent (United States Patent No. 4,558,302 and foreign equivalents) covers a data compression/decompression method utilized in many graphics formats, printer control languages, and modems. This includes the predominant GIF graphics format used on the Web and for mobile Internet services provided by companies such as NTT DoCoMo. In addition to the United States patent, Unisys holds corresponding patents in Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Japan (Japanese Patent No. 2,123,602 and 2,610,084), and the United Kingdom. Customers throughout the world have realized tremendous value using PictureIQ products to optimize image content for reliable Internet and mobile network delivery. This optimization often involves the conversion from one file format to another, such as GIF, to accommodate browser or other device-specific requirements. This new agreement with Unisys is in direct response to PictureIQ customer requests. Through the agreement, businesses that use applicable PictureIQ products, including third-party solutions that bundle applicable PictureIQ products on an OEM basis, can employ the patented Unisys LZW technology via TransForce and other PictureIQ-based products with the added reassurance of a direct business relationship between Unisys and PictureIQ.

"We’re solving a profound problem that addresses a multi-device, network-connected world of Internet services provided by varied content, network, and carrier providers," said President and CEO Tom Hull of PictureIQ Corp. "This direct license agreement with Unisys enhances our support and conversion of many different file formats, an essential part of our solution. Customers can also realize significant cost savings by using PictureIQ solutions to generate LZW-compressed files for display on the Web or other commercial uses, as opposed to directly paying associated licensing fees."

PictureIQ`s flagship product, PictureIQ TransForce, also uniquely incorporates Adobe® Photoshop® technology to provide unparalleled image quality within its patent-pending XML-based image rendering architecture. This popular plug-and-play server appliance is used by industry-leading companies throughout the world such as Nippon Ericsson and Toshiba in Japan.
