3COM SELECTS MOTIVE`S INTELLIGENT SERVICE SOLUTION

Internet Retailer

Austin, Texas, July 30, 2001 - Motive Communications, Inc. (www.motive.com), the leading provider of intelligent service software,

today announced that 3Com Corporation, Santa Clara, Calif., (Nasdaq: COMS) is offering Internet-based service powered by

Motive to its Network Interface Card (NIC) customers as the 3Com Connection Assistant.

3Com and Motive have entered into an agreement under which Motive`s intelligent service technology will be built directly

into 3Com`s NICs to provide full-service support to end users. For existing NIC users, the 3Com Connection Assistant is currently available for download on 3Com`s web site (www.3com.com/connectionassistant). This solution extends Motive`s

ServiceNet Platform to aid 3Com`s customers from the point at which they install their networking products to when they have

support issues such as getting updates to their drivers. With the Motive technology, when a problem or question arises

about networking, installation, etc., the customer simply clicks a button inside of the product, on the Web page, or in the middle of the transaction and receives the answer on the spot, eliminating the need to abandon the business task

to get service.

"3Com`s Universal Connectivity solutions lead the market because of the rich connectivity and ease-of-use capabilities that make connecting to information and people effortless," said John Hagerman, vice president of marketing for 3Com`s Business Connectivity Company. "The addition of the 3Com Connection Assistant to our access solutions further enhances the computing experience

for end users, giving them unparalleled networking support."

Intelligent service delivers more accurate information because it "knows" who the customer is and what the customer is doing

at the specific time of the problem or question. The Motive system collects and uses this information to connect the customer

to targeted self-service solutions, allowing the user to fix common problems without assistance; or connect the user, when necessary,

to the appropriate product or technical experts. In the latter case, Motive forwards along the contextual information so that

experts can see a comprehensive view of the situation as soon as they are connected, eliminating the need to troubleshoot from

scratch or to waste time with a series of difficult and repetitive questions.

"3Com has established itself as a leader in the networking industry by focusing on PC users` ability to quickly and easily share information," said Anna Clepper, Motive`s vice president of marketing. "By building our technology directly into 3Com`s NICs,

Motive provides an intelligent service solution that maximizes network connectivity and keeps business-critical information efficiently flowing within and between companies."

The 3Com Connection Assistant will not only provide diagnostics to service personnel for quick problem resolution, it will also

enhance the product experience for 3Com`s customers by offering faster, more effective service. As the first company in the

networking industry to adopt this type of solution, 3Com also gains a key competitive advantage. Finally, Motive`s existing customer relationships with the leading PC manufacturers will help provide their end users with a seamless service

experience by giving them easy access to 3Com`s Motive-powered automated support capabilities.
