Clothing sites, department stores, home sites experience major online growth between Christmas and New Year's

Following a down week between Dec. 18 and 24, traffic to leading online retailers rebounded notably during the week between Christmas and New Year's (Dec. 25 to Dec. 31), according to Alexa Research (http://www.alexaresearch.com), a web intelligence and traffic measurement service that is a subsidiary of Amazon.com. Online shoppers turned an estimated 1.86 billion pages at the 50 leading e-commerce sites for the week ending Dec. 31, 2000, making it the third busiest week of the fourth quarter, up from an estimated 1.66 billion the prior week (week ending Dec. 24). The holiday week rebound was particularly strong for clothing retailers, home furnishing, kitchen and bath retailers, and department stores. The 12.1% holiday week gain follows a 17.9% drop between the week ending Dec. 17 and the week ending Dec. 24. With total page views at the top 50 e-commerce sites topping 2 billion, the week ending Dec. 17 was the peak week of the quarter, followed by the week ending Dec. 10 (est. 1.92 billion) and the week ending Dec. 31.
