Bertelsmann To Sell eBooks

A HREF="http://www.bol.com">Bertelsmann Online, the media and entertainment shop of the Bertelsmann Group, is deploying Intershop Communication Inc.'s enfinity to sell electronic books online. Intershop enfinity's open architecture enabled integration with BOL's existing Web site and backoffice system. The new BOL eBook store offers 500 titles from 50 different publishers, including bestselling novels, how-to and special interest books in addition to online access to international publications such as the Financial Times. The electronic content for eBooks such as the Rocket eBook can be downloaded from the Internet at www.bol.com.

Intershop enfinity, which Guetersloh, Germany-based Bertelsmann calls the first complete XML and Java -based, sell-side e-business application, offers businesses "sell anywhere" capabilities on the Internet--through their own Web site, affiliate sites, portals and electronic marketplaces. To complete the integration, novomind, an Intershop partner and a supplier of intelligent software solutions, merged Intershop enfinity with BOL's existing business systems.

BOL shops are online in Germany, France, U.K., Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. BOL operates in the U.S. through Barnesandnoble.com, which Barnes & Noble and Bertelsmann AG formed as a 50-50 joint venture in 1998.
